This will be the 2nd annual Narcotic K9 Competition hosted by Crime Stoppers of SW Oklahoma. This event is open to all narcotic K9 teams and the event will be open to the public at no charge.
Event 1: Fastest Narcotic Detection
Event Type: Vehicle Narcotics Search
Search Area: 3 Vehicles
Scoring: Time + Accuracy Based
🔹 Objective
Each K-9 team must locate all planted narcotic hides across three vehicles as quickly and accurately as possible.
1. Search Setup
Three vehicles will be parked in a designated search area.
Each vehicle may contain 0–1 narcotic hides.
Hides will be real narcotics or certified training aids placed by a neutral official.
No vehicle will contain more than 1 hide.
2. Search Procedure
Each team will have a maximum of 5 minutes to complete the search.
Time begins when the handler gives the dog the search command.
The time will stop when the dog is rewarded and begin again once the handler gives the dog the search command again for the next find. The final time will be recorded when the handler rewards the dog on the final narcotic hide or time runs out.
If there is a blank during the K-9 team’s run, the time will continue until the next narcotic find is rewarded.
All times will be added together for a final scored time.
Handlers must reward the dog when they believe their K-9 has located the narcotic.
Handlers must clearly reward (toy or verbal praise) each alert or continue to the next vehicle to begin their search.
3. Scoring
+10 points for each correct alert (maximum 3 hides = 30 points).
−5 points for each false alert.
−1 point per 10 seconds beyond the 2-minute baseline.
Tie-breakers will be based on fastest time with the same score.
4. Disqualifications
Handler cueing the dog (obvious physical or verbal cues).
5. Conduct
Dogs must remain leashed during the search.
No communication between handlers about search areas.
Judges’ decisions are final.
Event 2: Article Search
Event Type: Article Detection/Search
Search Area: Grass, open field
Scoring: Accuracy + Time + Control
🔹 Objective
Each K-9 team must locate and alert on hidden articles in a defined search area using scent detection. Articles are judged based on the dog’s ability to locate, alert accurately, and complete the task within a time limit.
1. Search Setup
The field will be pre-planted with 3 hidden articles (e.g., gloves, keys, wallet, tools).
Articles will be contaminated with human scent.
Articles will be partially hidden but not buried (e.g., in grass, under leaves).
Handlers will not be told the location of articles.
2. Search Procedure
Teams have 5 minutes to search the designated area.
Dogs must indicate finds with a trained final response (e.g., down, sit, bark, stare).
Handler must reward the dog to alert the judge of a find. The time will stop when the dog is rewarded and begin again once the handler gives the dog the search command again for the next find. The final time will be recorded when the handler rewards the dog on the third article.
No physical interference or guiding by the handler.
Judges may deduct for multiple cues or excessive handler involvement
